Spiral Staircase
While you may no longer climb into the statue, they added windows in the base so that you can see inside. I really think there should be a lottery to let people go up once in a while.
The statue was closed after 9-11, and when they evaluated re-opening it they realized that the narrow spriral staircase in the middle was really not up to modern safety standards, so it has remained closed.
BTW, the security to get into the statue was the tightest I've ever passed through.
